Former Yorkton Regional High School student and current University of Saskatchewan track and field athlete Keegan Sharp added golf medal to his list of accomplishments at the 2012 Canadian Interuniversity Championships held in Winnipeg.

“The top 12 people in the country qualify,” he explained during a quick telephone interview with Yorkton This Week.

He participated in the pentathlon and was ranked third out of the 12 who qualified for the meet.

“I was pretty consistent all day,” he offered.

Pentathlon involved five elements of track and field and for the former resident of Yorkton, it came down to his final opportunity to win gold, the 1000-metre.

“It came down to the last event,” he recalled. “I needed to beat him by six seconds!”

According to Sharp the winner was likely going to depend on which athlete put their best foot forward that day. It would depend on “who was on their game”.

It was pretty close,” Sharp said of the final outcome which saw him perform six seconds better than his closest competitor, who hails from Ottawa, adds Sharp.

Sharp has been competing in track and field for years after first getting involved through high school when he attended the YRHS.

“I got serious about it in Gr. 10,” he noted, adding that he was playing hockey at the time too and decided he needed to make a decision.

Following his gold medal in Winnipeg, he believes he now has his top accomplishment within the track world.

“That’s probably my best accomplishment so far,” he said noting that it was for indoor track and field.

He has also gold from the 2007-08 Canadian Junior National Games and won a bronze medal in decathlon at the Canada Games in 2009.

He added that the latest accomplishment from Winnipeg was just a matter of him “following my coach’s program”.
