Joel Thompson of Yorkton’s Columbia School placed second in his division in the provincial archery championships in Moose Jaw.

Joel Thompson of Yorkton’s Columbia School was among the competitors at the 2012 Provincial Championships of Archery recently in Moose Jaw.

He was in the Gr. 4-5-6 competition class.

He finished in second place out of 107 other archers in that age group.

“He had a good year,” says Glenda Lazurko, Columbia School teacher and co-archery team coach at the Yorkton elementary school.

“He did okay at Saltcoats (too),” she said.

Thompson said archery was something he decided to take up after spending time playing around with other sports.

He thinks he may have found his calling with the bow and arrow.

His score definitely suggests that he has.

At the provincials in Moose Jaw, he cleaned up with a 261.

“It was something to try out and see if I like it,” he says casually.

He said he was confident following the opening round but added “I didn’t think I could shoot that high.”

At last year’s YRHS meet, he won a bow. He says he gets off practices only once per week.

“The team’s done really well,” insists Lazurko.

The numbers at Columbia School have doubled, she added.
