While the masses were being entertained, the dollar signs were ringing up for the Estevan Bruins on Friday night.
The team made well over $70,000 from its annual sportsman's dinner at Spectra Place. The total will likely be closer to $80k, but some expenses are still being tallied up.
Former Oilers and Kings tough guy Marty McSorley was the featured speaker at the event, while former Riders DT Scott Schultz and former Winnipeg Jets star Morris Lukowich also spoke. McSorley brought along Edmonton radio host/comedian Jungle Jim Jerome, who took questions from the floor for McSorley after doing a short spiel of his own. Riders play-by-play man Rod Pedersen emceed the event.
I'm hoping to get the audio from an interview with McSorley up on the blog later this week.
Prior to the supper, Mercury co-editor Chad Saxon and I spent roughly an hour on the Sports Cage with Pedersen and Schultz at the Tap House. It was a great time, not to mention the free food and "libations" as Schultz put it, provided by Tony Sereggela.
In other Bruin news, graduating left winger Matthew Dochylo recently committed to the SAIT Trojans in Calgary, where he will be taking a four-year respiratory therapy program. You can read the story in Wednesday's Mercury. Congrats Matthew.
And finally, today is the day SJHL teams can begin signing players and making trades as player cards have been issued. Expect some Bruins news on that front later today or tomorrow.
