TV medical dramas are many and varied, but there is at least one element that they all have in common. Whether dramatic or comedic, all medical dramas seem to feature doctors and nurses wearing identical, dull scrubs and uniforms. A new store in the Battlefords, Tombi Uniforms and Scrubs that opened on Wednesday, Feb. 1, seeks to change all that, by selling practical, fashionable scrubs for the health care industry.
Tombi Uniforms and Scrubs, located at 1236-101st Street, downtown North Battleford, next to Bill and Don’s Men’s Wear, was started by Ilse Moolman, who came to the Battlefords from South Africa in July 2004. Ilse’s husband is a doctor, whose profession brought him and his family to North Battleford.
With her husband being in the medical field, she saw a need for quality clothing beyond the stereotypical scrubs seen so often in hospitals. She started her research by sending out surveys and attending a uniform trade show in Las Vegas. She was impressed by the variety and designer look of various brands. The positive feedback from the surveys encouraged her to start her scrubs business.
Ilse wants Tombi Uniforms and Scrubs to offer the community and surrounding areas a pleasant shopping experience, plus the variety of brands and sizes not readily available in a small town. She wants to give back to the health care community. They work endless hours, and deserve to have the option to do so in comfort and style, she says. She stresses though, the clothing line is not limited to the health care field alone and anyone can benefit from it. The store features the hottest trends by leading companies in the industry; Koi, NrG, ICU, Grey’s Anatomy, Cherokee, Sketchers, Baby Phat, Dickies, Ecko and Nurse Mates. The store offers sizes XXS – 5XL as well as the hottest shoes and accessories. Gift cards are also available.
Tombi means young girl in Zulu – a language native to South Africa — and in its name, layout and philosophy, Tombi Uniforms and Scrubs is bright, cheery and inviting.
Ilse invites everyone to visit Tombi Monday to Friday (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) to see what the store has to offer.
