Last year it was a Juno award winning jazz singer. This year its a look into the universe of the late John Lennon.
As always at this time of year, the final show of the Battelefords Jazz Society season is sponsored in conjunction with the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival.
This season's finale, to be held at the Chapel Gallery June 27, will feature Shine On: the Universe of John Lennon, a spectacular group made of some of Canada’s most renowned musicians, performing music by John Lennon and the Beatles uniquely arranged by Michael Occhipinti.
Featuring the voices of Yvette Tollar, Dominic Mancuso and Elizabeth Shepherd, paired with the talents of Mark Kelso (drums), Kevin Turcotte (trumpet), Roberto Occhipinti (bass) and Michael Occhipinti (guitar), this unique group first came together in December of 2010 for a special concert to mark the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s death. Thrilled at the chance to work together, the musicians have commenced work on a recording to be released in 2012.
The brainchild of renowned Canadian Jazz guitarist Occhipinti, this unique show has been getting rave reviews across the country.
The Battlefords Jazz Society has been bringing excellent music to the community for more than 15 years. Operated by a board of directors and the efforts of volunteers, the society organizes about four events a year. Known for going beyond the confines of one genre, the group has brought in rock, reggae, folk, big band, country, swing, trios, quartets and marching bands, to name a few. Each year the Jazz Society strives to include local musicians in the mix, showcasing some of the excellent talent residing in the Battlefords and area.
Tickets to this final show of the season will be $20 ($15 members) and are available at NuFloors, Bee-J’s or from any Battlefords Jazz Society director.
