The Yorkton Cardinals were on an extended road trip this past week, playing four in Alberta and a pair in Swift Current.

For the local team the results were mixed as they won two of the six Western Major Baseball League encounters.

The results of the long road trip leave Yorkton tied with Weyburn both with records of 7-12, 8.5-games behind the WMBL East Division-leading Regina Red Sox.

Melville -- who the Cardinals were scheduled to play last night (Tuesday) at Jubilee Park in the city, although results were not available at press time -- are in second place in the Division five-games off-the-pace.

The Cardinals are off to play in Melville Friday, with the teams back in Yorkton Sunday, for Canada Day action.

As for the week’s efforts, Sunday gave the Cardinals their worst game of the entire season and it started in Swift Current.

They were pounded on by the Indians to a tune of 14-3.

Four Cardinals pitchers worked eight innings, allowing a combined 23 hits, 14 runs, and 10 of those were earned. The Cardinal pitchers also walked four, and managed no strikeouts.

Bryce Manning was the starter, and took the loss, lasting only one inning, allowing six runs on only five hits.

It was a better result in the scoreboard against the Indians on Monday, but still a loss as the Cardinals fell, 3-1. Starter Dylan Tye had a strong outing going seven innings, scattering seven hits, and the three runs, two of those earned.

However, a trio of Indian pitchers limited the Cardinals to only two hits and the one run.

In Alberta

This past Friday night saw the birds in Okotoks. The scheduled game was washed away, forcing the teams into a double-header Saturday.

In the opener, the Dawgs dominated, winning 7-0, on a night Yorkton generated only three hits off Okotoks’ Bret Derooy who went the distance in the seven-inning contest.

Jamie Whitehead lasted 4.2 innings as the Cardinal starter, allowing five hits, and six earned runs in taking the loss. The Cardinals fared better in the second game of the day, winning by a 3-2 count. Logan Hershenow took the win on the hill for the Cardinals, scattering seven hits over seven innings, allowing two runs, both of those earned.

Gabe Cook had a one-inning save. The road trip began last Wednesday in Lethbridge where the host Bulls won 7-4. Corey Thompson lasted only three innings as the Cardinal starter, allowing eight hits and six runs, all of those earned to take the loss.

Offensively Brayon Colley did swipe his seventh of the campaign.

The following night (Thursday), the Cardinals returned the favour, defeating the host Bulls 8-5.

Brett Smith had a three-hit night for Yorkton in the win, and Reid Flasch had a pair of runs-batted-in

On the mound Travis Donahoo went seven, scattering nine hits but allowing on four earned runs, while striking out six to get the win.

Next up for the Cardinals is two home games and one away game. Last night, weather permitting, they were scheduled to play Melville at home. Results were not available in time for press. On Friday, they head to Pirie Field in Melville for a rematch with the Millionaires. The teams get together for a third straight time on their annual Canada Day affair at Jubilee Park. Game time is scheduled for  at 7:05 p.m.
