The Speers Recreation Board continues to be busy in 2012.

The board hosted 120 people for a perogy supper and social April 21. Following supper there was a Kaiser tournament, a friendly poker game and board games played. Helping to pinch perogies for the supper were Bev Foster, Mary Harach, Mo Kachmarski, Jeanette Partyka, Anita Rebeyka, Pauline Karp, Josephine Baranieski, and Sally Nicholson. Sally donated an afghan as a raffle prize and John Dove organized the Kaiser. The board will try to host a similar event in the fall.

April 28, a local art show was hosted. Around a dozen exhibitors displayed their works, which included photography, painting, sketching, needlework and woodwork. Ruth Foster, Colleen Wicks and Elizabeth Smith organized this year’s show.

Jam sessions continue on the second Friday of May and June, but will now take a summer break. Sessions will start again the second Friday in September. All musicians and attendees are wished a relaxing summer holiday. Their entertainment is appreciated.

June 9, a party in the park was hosted to celebrate June as Parks and Recreation Month. Up and Away was the theme and 45 participants joined teams to compete in paper airplane contests, parachute games, cloud tower building, kite tail construction and cloud relay racing. Teams were rewarded with helium balloons, with the yellow team collecting the most balloons that day. Some of the planned events had to be cancelled due to the rain, but everyone still had fun inside the hall. A barbeque supper with cake, ice cream and cotton candy was served and everyone went home with a parks and recreation Frisbee, water bottle, football or pen. Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association and SaskLotteries sponsored this event.

The board decided the playground equipment needed painting, so last week Lisa Moore and Glynis Oliver completed that project. Gene at Haleboh Paints provided advice and beautifully mixed, bright paint.

Over the summer the board will host the Rivers West District mobile playground July 18 and Aug. 15 for kids ages five and up. An entry for the Hafford Summer Sizzle parade will also be decorated.

Anyone interested in renting the Speers Community Centre or kitchen can contact Glynis Oliver at 246-2005.
