Now I know my opinion on this subject wonít be accepted by the majority of readers. With the population of Saskatchewan being fairly conservative, the topic of abortion is normally straight up frowned upon.
I am about to tell you why I donít think abortions should be made illegal, so if you donít wish to hear about this, please do not read on. I have to admit I was pretty frightened to even write this opinion piece, but in journalism school you are taught to write honestly. If you arenít making someone mad, you probably arenít doing your job.
I am not pro using the abortion clinics as a form of birth control. For people who are having regular unprotected sex and end up getting pregnant, they should have realized there were consequences. If you are getting several abortions a year, or every couple of years, I see the problem here.
Even saying this, I still do think that if you have a condom break once in your life, or your birth control fails, you shouldnít have to bring a child into a world where you can not care for it. Yes, adoption exists for a reason, but does no one realize how many kids out there already need to be adopted first? What happens to these children when new babies are brought into the world is that they are sometimes forgotten about. The majority of parents looking to adopt want a newborn baby, not some five year old child or a teenager.
But most anti-choice groups oppose contraception and sex education. I guess they just want to return to the days of dirty, unsafe, illegal abortions. This sounds so much better right? Or maybe they naively believe they can stop young women and youth from even having sex.
What about the women who are raped? Are they expected to go through with a pregnancy they never wanted? Instead of healing from such a terrible circumstance, are they expected to remember it for the remainder of their nine months pregnancy, or even worse the rest of their childís life? But, of course, arguments say the fetus that is barely even human yet is more important than the life that already exists with the grown woman, or teenage rape victim.
Every day protestors berate young women who are already in a fragile state and mindset on their way to face a difficult emotional operation. They want to deliver the most terror and agony possible to the expectant mothers in hopes of changing the girl or womanís opinions, wanting to add another life to the world.
In my opinion, if someone does not feel they are able to go to term with a baby, nor are they capable of caring for the child afterwards, then this is their choice. Again, I do not believe abortion should be used as a form of birth control, but it is every femalesí right to live life as they please, just as it is every malesí right to live theirs. Men leave before their children are born every day, why canít women decide they arenít ready either?
