On June 23, at the Original Humboldt site eight kilometres southwest of the city, dignitaries and members of the Humboldt branch of the Royal Canadian Legion joined 15 members of the Governor General’s Horse Guards at a special ceremony. Led by Lt.-Col. Glenn Develiadis, the Horse Guards raised a flag at the site. It was in 1885 that the first Body Guards (as the troop was then called) set up camp near the Humboldt Telegraph Station to guard supplies for the Canadian troops under the direction of Lt.-Col. Denison during the North West Rebellion.
