The Parkland Racing Association has enjoyed a flawless racing schedule so far as all three of the scheduled race dates have gone ahead as planned. That is a big improvement from last year’s schedule, says Dustin Heddon, new president of the PRA.
After having several rain dates slated in last year, the PRA has had nearly perfect weather so far and Heddon says that if it keeps up through the rest of the season, the remaining months of the season could actually set a standard for having raced on each scheduled date and not having any rain delays.
The only delay they experienced Sunday was for the track to be watered down in between races.
Sunday also saw 140 people take part in the event and about 20 race car drives, some of whom came from well outside the Parkland region in order to test their cars on the race track which is located just outside of Yorkton.
Heddon said it’s another good sign when drivers come in from as far away as Tisdale and Moose Jaw to take part in a race.
That seems to result in attendance numbers going up, he said.
“Every race has been getting more and more attendance. We counted it up yesterday…roughly 140 people.”
The race car drivers were out on the track later than usual over the past weekend and he said they are working on things to help keep people out there a little longer and hopefully provide other options for those not into the driving.
Heddon and the PRA have set up concession stands, a broadcast tower and the idea to hold merchandise vendors was also put into place, said Heddon, adding that the majority of those who come out are families with little kids.
He said the best part of the day was knowing that there is interest in the Yellowhead Speedway from all over the province, adding that it was great to have a rig with at least four cars on it and a full crew, show up from Moose Jaw and there were some who made the trip from Tisdale, he said.
Which Heddon said he was very thankful for them making the trip out.
