Three children and an 18-year-old girl are dead following a collision with a train approximately 5 km east of Broadview.
Fifteen-year-old Luke Morrison was the driver of the camper van that was struck by a CP train at an uncontrolled rail crossing on a grid road just south of Highway 1 on the evening of August 9. He was severely injured and transported by air ambulance to Regina for treatment.
Four other passengers in the van were pronounced dead at the scene: Morrison's 11-year-old sister Bailey, their seven-year-old brother Roy, an 11-year-old girl from another family who has not been named, and 18-year-old Tori Delarue.
Delarue was from the Whitewood, SK area. The other deceased passengers were from Turner Valley, Alberta.
Passenger Vicki Morrison, the 42-year-old mother of the driver and two of the deceased, survived the crash.
Fatal rollover
On August 9 at approximately 10:20 am, members from the Esterhazy RCMP, EMS and Fire Department responded to a single vehicle rollover 1 km north of Esterhazy on the 637 Highway.
A 27-year-old man from the Redvers, SK area was the lone occupant of the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene. An RCMP accident reconstructionist was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.
At the time of the incident, road conditions and weather conditions were good. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
Multiple charges in Kamsack arrest
On Sunday, August 5 at approximately 2:00 pm, Kamsack RCMP members were called to a residence in Kamsack in regards to an assault with a weapon complaint. The suspect in this assault was located at a business on the Keeseekoose First Nation and arrested for assault with a weapon.
Subsequent to the arrest, the accused was found in possession of a quantity of marijuana as well as prescription pills. The suspect also resisted members' efforts to arrest him.
As a result of this incident, 23-year-old Jeffrey Kyle Kayseas of Kamsack has received a number of charges under both the Criminal Code and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. These charges include assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, and possession of drugs (marijuana and prescription pills).
At the time of this incident, Kayseas was on an Justice of the Peace Undertaking from outstanding charges before the courts. He was to abide by conditions as a result of this undertaking, including that he keep the peace and be of good behavior. Kayseas was also charged with breaching this undertaking.
Kayseas has been remanded in custody and was scheduled to appear in Kamsack Provincial Court on August 14.
Prescription drug bust
On Friday, August 3 at approximately 4:00 pm, Kamsack RCMP members initiated a vehicle stop on a rural road near Duck Mountain Provincial Park. Subsequent investigation during this traffic stop resulted in a large quantity of prescription pills being recovered from the vehicle.
As a result, a 49-year-old male resident of the Keeseekoose First Nation has been charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with possession of a drug for the purpose of trafficking. The accused will be appearing in Kamsack Provincial Court on Tuesday, September 18.
