Skatepark ready for part-time use

Yorkton's new skatepark is now open from 7 p.m. to dusk.

With construction nearly complete, Yorkton's new skatepark on Brodie Avenue is now open in the evenings.

Crews are still working at the site, requiring it to be closed each day from 7 am until 7 pm. But the park could be fully open within days.

"The skatepark itself, the actual concrete, is done. But we still have equipment in the area finishing up the landscaping around it, so it's still a construction site for a little while longer," said Darcy McLeod, Yorkton's Director of Community Development, Parks & Recreation, on Monday.

"We're hoping that by the weekend or possibly next week sometime we'll be able to open it up completely."

Once the concrete was set, eager skateboarders were already sneaking into the park in the early mornings and late evenings when workers weren't around. Rather than fight the incursions, the city decided to officially open the park from 7 p.m. until dusk starting August 13.

A grand opening is planned for September to follow this month's unofficial opening of the park.

The $350,000 Yorkton Skateboard, Bike, and Walking Park was built using city funds and

a $150,000 grant from the Aviva Community Fund. Work on the park by Newline Skateparks has proceeded on schedule since it began in June.

The park is a fully featured recreation destination for skateboarders — the first of its kind in the area.
