Jewelry store owners ponder future of diamond swallowed by suspect

WINDSOR, Ont. - The owners of a Windsor, Ont., jewelry store are undecided about the future of a diamond that spent a week and a half inside a man accused of swallowing the stone.

Police say the man passed the $20,000 diamond over the weekend, and it has been returned to Precision Jewellers.

Co-owner Dan Thomas says the store will take its time and consider the options.

He says the easiest solution would probably be to use diamond brokers.

For now, Thomas says they're keeping the diamond, adding there's a lot of interest from people who want to see the stone.

Richard Mackenzie Matthews, 52, is alleged to have swallowed the 1.7-carat stone after switching it for a fake. He is charged with theft and breach of court conditions, and is due back in court Monday.

He is also wanted on warrants in Toronto.
