Bring strawberries to room temperature an hour before eating for maximum flavour

Here are some tips for selecting and storing fresh local strawberries:

— Choose plump, firm, deep-coloured strawberries, with bright green caps and no signs of mould or soft spots. Strawberries do not ripen further after harvesting.

— Store strawberries in the refrigerator for one to two days.

— Wash and hull strawberries just before using them. For the best flavour, bring them to room temperature about an hour before eating.

— A 340-g (12-oz) basket of strawberries will give you 875 ml (3 1/2 cups) whole strawberries or 550 ml (2 1/4 cups) sliced strawberries.

— A 250-ml (1-cup) serving contains about 50 calories.
