Residents of the city of Estevan will go to the polls today to select the members of Estevan city council for the next four years, while those who live in the rural municipality of Estevan will vote for a reeve.

Three people are vying to be mayor in Estevan. Incumbent Roy Ludwig has been challenged by Rhyan Hagel and James Halladay. Halladay opposed Ludwig in 2012; Hagel is running for council for the first time.

Nine candidates are running for councillor. Incumbents Greg Hoffort, Brian Johnson, Trevor Knibbs, Dennis Moore and Kevin Smith are all seeking another term. Travis Frank, Cameron Robock, Shelly Veroba and Lyle Yanish also want to join council. Robock and Veroba have run previously; Frank and Yanish are first-time candidates.

Six of the nine councillor candidates will be elected to council.

In the RM of Estevan, incumbent reeve Kelly Lafrentz has been challenged by Terry Keating and Janet Severson.

The RM will not need to have elections for Divisions 1, 3 and 5, as those were decided by acclamation. Incumbent councillors Lorne Jahn (Division 1), Dennis Blackburn (Division 3) and Del Block (Division 5) will be on the RM council for another four years.

Polls in both the city and the RM of Estevan will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The polling stations in the city are at the Estevan Church of God for those who live on the north side of the CP Rail tracks, and the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum for those south of the tracks.

The polling station for the RM of Estevan is at the RM office.

The Mercury will have full coverage of the results as they become available this evening.
