Several communities in southeast Saskatchewan enjoyed a visit with elder Dick Byrd of Fort Qu’Appelle as part of Aboriginal Storyteller Month celebrations.

Byrd spoke to students at Bienfait Weldon School, Pleasantdale School and Stoughton School on Wednesday. He also brought a number of artifacts and other items with him to help illustrate traditional and contemporary stories of his people.

After receiving applause from the students, Byrd told them that they should only clap after he finishes singing.

He then discussed different ways that the students can greet each other and offered some history on the Estevan area, before sharing the stories and the music of Indigenous people.

Christine Batke, the children’s program co-ordinator at the Estevan Public Library, told the students that each month, libraries across Saskatchewan celebrate Aboriginal Storytelling Month to honour the way in which Indigenous people have passed down stories through the generations.
