Lampman School ready for grad

Grade 12 students at Lampman School will have a night to remember at their annual graduation ceremony on May 25.

Grade 12 students at Lampman School will have a night to remember at their annual graduation ceremony on May 25.

Christine Branyik-Thornton, who is the teacher representative on the school’s grad committee, said the event has really strong parent groups, and the student groups have worked hard.

Eighteen students will graduate from Lampman School this year. The school typically has 15 to 18 students graduate. Last there were only 11, she said, and next year 24 students are scheduled to graduate.

During grad night, a supper will be served at the town’s arena at 5:30 p.m. Then the event will shift to the school’s gymnasium for the formal grad ceremonies at 7 p.m. The theme is “So the Adventure Begins.”

Valedictorian Katelyn Hutt will give a speech at the ceremony. The guest speaker is Robin Ulrich, a Lampman School alumnus who went on to be a player and a coach with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey program.

A few scholarships and diplomas will also be handed out.

There will also be a video presentation paying tribute to the graduates.

Branyik-Thornton noted it will also be the final grad night for principal Lisa Smith, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Graduation is not just a big event for the school, it’s a night of celebration for the community as a whole in a small town.

The size of the grad class will ultimately determine how many people will attend, but Branyik-Thornton said 300 to 400 people will be at the ceremony each year.

“Everyone looks forward to it,” said Branyik-Thornton. “Besides the fact that the kids have successfully completed their public schooling, it’s a beautiful event. Everyone decorates. The grads decorate very well. They look beautiful.”

Not only do the grads look great, but the school’s gymnasium is well-decorated for grad night, she said.
