Creighton Lodge highlights for January

Creighton Lodge hosted a number of different activities in January.

It was a very quiet place around here in January, with so many of our residents down and out with the flu or something of that nature.

Even when we had our wonderful entertainers come to play and sing, there was a much smaller crowd that came out to enjoy them. I think the bugs have run their course, though, as things are picking up and you can hear the chatter at the coffee table again.

Maybe this run of very cold weather will be good for getting rid of the germs.

In January, we were entertained by the Freebies, Janice Hirsch, the Happy Wanderers, Mel Herman and Doreen Sanderson, and Bob Olson and family. We’re so fortunate to have the many different groups who perform for us on a regular basis.

We did our evening of card making with Audrey MacMurchy and Susan Mack. We are really enjoying this craft and the ladies are so pleasant.

Joan Wock came every Wednesday to call Bingo, which we so much enjoy. Christina Wock stopped in with her therapy dogs for a visit every week. If it weren’t for all our volunteers, it would sure be a quiet place around here.

Thanks goes out to the Estevan Ministerial Association, as they provide us with our weekly Sunday services. We appreciate not having to brave the cold and ice to get to church in the winter.

We also thank St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Trinity Lutheran Church and St. Paul’s United Church for providing mass and communion for us.

Although we can’t be outside walking around, we get a lot of exercise inside. Some of us walk the halls with our Urban Poles, some use their melt balls, and lots come out for regular exercises by Sharon Dayman and Irene Tarnes. There’s no excuse for being idle around here.

We really enjoy our cocktail hour, hosted by Sharon Dayman and Melodye Pierson. We get the best appetizers and really enjoy our time visiting. Movie day is also fun; popcorn and pop are our favourite treats for that. We watched Grumpy Old Men and would like to say there aren’t any of those around here.

Our Fabulous Five – Margaret Mack, Marge Heidinger, Doreen Hagen, Jean Delorme and Sylvia Prime – are so faithful to help out with our monthly birthday party and our KFC night. These ladies are such a big help and always so committed, come rain, shine or sleet.

We also want to thank Sun Country Hearing, who visits the lodge once a month to clean or fix our hearing aids. It’s another one of those things that we have to do but thankfully don’t have to go out in this awful weather and risk a fall to do it.

We had two visits last month from the Christian ethics class from the Estevan Comprehensive School. It was very interesting interacting with these students and we are so glad they chose our home to come to.

We were saddened when our longest Creighton Lodge resident moved onto the Estevan Regional Nursing Home. We said good-bye to Lorraine Bonokoski, who had lived at Creighton Lodge for 40 years. She was a very special lady, a delight to visit with, and we wish her well at her new home.

We also said good-bye to our very dear friend, Father Cornelius Lucy, as he also moved into the nursing home. We will miss his funny stories and great discussions, and know he will be sharing them all over again with the residents there.

Plans are underway for our annual fundraiser gala in April. We are looking forward to raising more funds to go towards the many capital projects we have on our list. The first project for 2018 will be work on the parking lots. Stay tuned for news about that.
