Creighton Lodge residents ready for new season of activities

The snow hasn’t fallen in significant amounts yet, but the air is cold enough we may wake up tomorrow morning to a blanket of white.

Oh well, the plant pots have been emptied, the vegetables are harvested and the snow blower has been prepared for the season ahead.

We look back on our summer and remember the many lovely days we had to walk around the building, sit in the gazebo and enjoy all the flowers. A big thanks to staff member Donna McGillicky for looking after our raised garden this year. She sure has a green thumb. We haven’t kept a list this year of all the people who donated produce, but there has been a steady stream of tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, carrots, beets, zucchini and potatoes arriving through that kitchen door. Thanks to all of you in the community who think of us at this time of year.

Life is grand here at the Lodge. We’re happy to welcome back some of our volunteers who took the summer off and we’re excited to get back into our entertainment routine.

Speaking of entertainment, thanks to The Feeebies, the Happy Wanderers, the Church of Christ singers, Kelley and Del, and Bob Olson for their part in the musical portion of our month. We sure love to be entertained. We watched two movies this month; Yours, Mine and Ours and While You Were Sleeping. We love our snacks too.

We enjoyed our cocktail night and want to thank our dedicated volunteers, Sharon Dayman, Melodye Pierson and Norma Blackburn for taking time to help us out with the preparations and serving. We enjoy visiting with them.

We had a great time when the Creighton Lodge Choir took the Smile van over to Hillview Manor to entertain everyone over there. It’s only right we give back, as we are so fortunate to have a large group of people who regularly entertain us. The residents of Hillview were very appreciative and we all had a great time renewing friendships and enjoying each other’s company.

This past month we had an Alia N Tanjay clothing sale and we shopped ‘til we dropped. We’re all outfitted with new winter clothes now. We also put on a very successful Alzheimer’s Coffee Break event and raised $765 for the Alzheimer Society. We listened to a speech on Alzheimer prevention, which was very enlightening.

We said goodbye to Gordon Leonard as he has taken up residence in St. Joseph’s long-term care home. We will miss Gordon’s humour and stories and we hope he enjoys his new home. We welcomed Loretta Marcotte to the Creighton Lodge family. We hope she likes it here and feels at home very soon.

Our churches continue to supply Sunday services and communion to us on a weekly basis. Now with the cold weather coming, we appreciate them all the more. We want to thank Christina Wock for her kindness in bringing her therapy dogs here to let us pet and cuddle them. Her dogs are trained for visiting with seniors by the St. John Ambulance Dog Therapy Program. How lucky we are. And how lucky that her mom, Joan, likes to call Bingo every Wednesday night. We love our Bingo and really hate to miss our Wednesday night games.

Lastly, we want to thank our exercise volunteers and our birthday party volunteers. We are grateful for the commitment they have made to Creighton Lodge. Our exercise ladies are Jessica Lewgood, Sharon Dayman, Monica MacKenzie and Irene Tarnes. Among the four of them, we work every muscle in our bodies, cover our cardio workout and weight lifting. We are in great shape thanks to them. Our birthday party and KFC volunteers are Margaret Mack, Marj Heidinger, Jean Delorme and Doreen Hagen. They make sure our party is a success and they serve the KFC dinner to us on the fourth Thursday each month. We love having them. They are a fun group of ladies.

We’re looking forward to our Christmas Shopping Bonanza on the evening of Nov. 8 here in our new lounge. We will have our own personal night to shop for baking and Christmas gifts or maybe just something for ourselves. We would like to extend an invitation to folks from the community to stop by and take a look or to buy a pie or that Christmas present for a special person. There will be lots of different vendors between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. That means something for everyone. See you there.
