Bruno, the chocolate Labrador retriever who spent 27 grueling days at the bottom of an abandoned 10-foot water well, is continuing his long journey toward recovery said his owners, John and Cindy Billesberger, who were unaware of the well’s existence at the far end of their rural Estevan property, until Bruno, one of their three pet Labradors, fell into it.

Bruno went missing Sept. 17 and was discovered and rescued on Oct. 14.

The severely malnourished, mud-caked 7-year-old dog was rushed to the Prairie Animal Health Centre’s (PAHC) veterinary clinic in Estevan where his condition was assessed and stabilized before transporting him to the PAHC centre in Weyburn and then back to Estevan.

Bruno’s recovery is now continuing at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.

The owners state Bruno, who lost over half his body weight during the ordeal, will begin physio therapy in Saskatoon soon and an exposed bone on a toe will be tended to later once he regains strength.

Bruno’s remarkable survival story has been a hot topic among several news agencies in the province and even gained media attention in New York.

A more complete recounting of Bruno’s extraordinary misadventure will be found in the Oct. 26 edition of The Mercury.
