Estevan's population is growing, despite the economic slowdown, according to federal census data released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday morning.

The City of Estevan was home to 11,483 people, which was an increase of 3.9 per cent from the 2011 census, which pegged Estevan's population at 11,054 people. The 2011 figure was questioned by Estevan city council and other local residents, since it seemed low due to the number of people living and working in Estevan during an oil and construction boom.

The Rural Municipality of Estevan, meanwhile, was home to 1,370 people, which was a 20.3 per cent increase from the 1,139 residents recorded in the RM in 2011.

The total population between the city and the RM was 12,853.
