William Arthur McNichol, beloved husband of Martha McNichol, passed away Friday, March 16, 2007 at the age of 86 years at Hillview Manor in Estevan, Saskatchewan with his family by his side.
Bill was born to Arthur and Susan McNichol (Janzen) in Yorkton on October 10, 1920. His family moved to Ebenezer, just ten miles north of Yorkton where Bill attended school.
He joined the army on December 28th, 1940. He went to Camp Shilo just outside of Brandon until he left to England in June of 1941. In England he was posted to the 26th Battery of the 4th Field Artillery Regiment and in July 1944 went to France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. In 1945 he returned to Canada to stay with his family who had since moved to Nokomis.
In 1946 Bill met Martha while he was living in Yorkton. They were married January 4, 1947. Bill worked as a relief operator for the CPR for 19 years. In 1960 Bill, Martha and their three children took up residence in Estevan. In 1968 Bill started Estevan Realty. He worked in the real estate and insurance business until he retired in 1985.
Bill was active in Westminster Presbyterian Church and enjoyed travelling to visit with family and friends, both in Canada and the United States. Grandchildren and great grandchildren provided many hours of joy, laughter and love for both Bill and Martha. Bill was a member of the Legion Estevan Branch #60 and Estevan Masonic Lodge.
Bill was predeceased by his father Arthur, mother Susan, sisters Ruth Blommaert, Eva Turner, Maude Corsie and brother Louis McNichol.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Martha; daughter Karen (Don) Olshanoski of Coronach; sons Doug (Deena) McNichol of Regina, and Garth (Eileen) McNichol of Covington, Georgia. Grandchildren Alisa (Jay) Shaver of Regina; Scott (Holly) Olshanoski, Warman; Stephen (Laine) Olshanoski of Moose Jaw; Harrison McNichol, Regina; Justin (Melissa) McNichol, Denver, Colorado. Great grandchildren, Andrew Shaver; Kaylyn, Shanna, Ainsley, Ava, Tegan and Kaydence Olshanoski; Alex and Alexa McNichol. Also survived by sisters-in-law Margaret McNichol, Margaret Blommaert, Marge (Rae) Beedle, Anne Stone, Ann Achtemichuk, and brother-in-law Alex (Carol) Achtemichuk and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. All will miss his kind and gentle manner.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at St. PaulŐs United Church in Estevan with Rev. John Ferrier officiating, assisted by Shirley Strachan.
Arrangements were entrusted to Orsted Funeral Home, Estevan, Sask.
Interment was at Estevan City Cemetery.
