Harvey Leroy Hildahl was born on July 26, 1921 on the family farm 10 miles north of Estevan. He was the 6th of 8 children born to Edwin and Julia Hildahl.
Baptized as an infant, Harvey was confirmed at the Snaasen Church. He attended Hill View School. Harvey loved working the land and with the animals. At one point he even trained his dog Trixie to carry an empty cream bottle on its collar across the road to bring back cream. This was particularly handy when the weather was nasty outside.
In 1945 he got his first tractor and plough. In 1954 he married Vivian June Drader and they moved for a few months to live above the Burger Block in Estevan. It was not long before Harvey and Vivian purchased their own farm from Peter Kukart.
Together Harvey and Vivian raised two children, Blair and Vinola. Harvey was always right with his kids, and loved to tease his grandchildren among others.
Harvey did not want to travel much; it meant leaving the farm and the animals. But they did travel to Minneapolis for health care and later to Banff a few times to visit Vinola when she lived there. Harvey always had time for visitors, and always had time to enjoy a cup of coffee. He often stopped three times on the way to Agribition for a cup.
Harvey sang, whistled and played the guitar and violin, often entertaining people whenever and wherever they gathered. In 1999, when he was 78, Harvey and Vivian moved off the farm into Estevan to their current house.
This last year Harvey came down with pneumonia, spent weeks in the hospital, in Weyburn in the nursing home and then last December he moved back to Estevan to the nursing home here. Even in the nursing home Harvey sang, singing verses to songs the family had never heard before. His memory for songs remained intact even when he could not remember names.
Last Tuesday, June 19, 2007 Harvey died at 10:30 a.m. with Vivian at his side, peacefully breathing his last breath in his sleep. By GodŐs Grace he joins the host of saints in light, as a sinner redeemed by Jesus Christ.
