My house just received a major overhaul. Fall is typically our busiest time of year and so the major fall cleaning/purge that I usually want to do usually doesn’t get to happen.
When I prepare to decorate for Christmas, though, is when I always end up doing that deep clean, decluttering, and then reorganizing.
I’ve realized that it has become an important value of mine and my husband’s to be very intentional in the spaces we create in our home. Though I’ve always enjoyed decorating my home it wasn’t until we started homeschooling that I started to look at every space in a new light.
We spend a lot of hours in our home. That means it has to work for us. It has to inspire us. It has to be a safe and beautiful place.
Over the winter months, I love to create cozy and inviting spaces. Ones that draw my family in. The first step for me in this process is to declutter. It’s important for both my kids and myself that everything has a home or a place to go back to. When they know where that it is, it’s much easier for them to keep the house uncluttered. When the house isn’t overrun by “stuff,” we have space to play, to create and to breathe.
I also change all our duvets and shams with the season. That means that they’ve just transitioned from geometrics and florals to red and white gingham for Christmas. The kids also have their own six-foot rose gold tree in their room and log fireplace. Just that simple switch has drawn them up there more and more. My son excitedly exclaimed to his sister, “Let’s go chill and read in our room!” I love that they love their space.
Our table has also become a more inviting space with the addition of a craft paper runner that we can draw on as well as brass candle sticks and pine cones. We linger longer over meals doodling and conversing.
