Before the SaskTel Tankard is earned by the best men's curling team in the province in 2018 in Estevan, it'll first have to be given a bit of a warming up and a celebration.

In steps the Sasktel Tankard committee with just the thing.

“We're kicking off the Tankard at the curling rink with a Kick Off The Tankard party October 21,” said Melissa Granrud. The party is free to attend.

“We just want the public to know about this event and that the community has been selected for the event,” she said. “It's just a come and go, everyone's welcome and you don't have to be a curler. We're going to have music and door prizes and snacks and beverages.”

The event will also have a Cool Curling tabletop game, which will need pre-registration at estevantankard@gmail.com or there are also limited entries.

“It's like shuffleboard, but the curling rocks do real curling like they do on ice,” Granrud said. “There will be a little tournament – a singles tournament and a doubles tournament that night. The winners will win an event pass to the Tankard.”

The games will be either short or long depending on how many people enter.

Interest in the event will start to rise after the event, it's hoped, and with that interest will come the desire to volunteer. They are working for sponsorships, volunteers and any businesses that may be interested in buying up the corporate passes for the Jan. 31-Feb. 4, 2018 event.

“The entire committee will be there at the party as well to answer questions,” Granrud said.

A volunteer committee handled by Pam DeChief will determine the best fit for volunteers over the next couple of months.

“We're going to be having a get-together at some point with all the volunteers just to thank them and fill them in on the event,” Granrud said. “Just so everybody's on the same page heading to the actual event in January.”

Adam Casey 's rink from Regina's Highland Curling Club was the winner from last year's SaskTel Tankard. The last Estevan-based rink to win was Jim Packet's 1997 rink including third Jeff Mosley, second Dallas Duce and lead Ken Loeffler.
