The Estevan Elecs senior girls' volleyball squad hosted their annual tournament on the weekend and were extremely pleased with their third place finish.

"We're definitely happy with third. We played against two tough teams that have both won provincials in the past two years," said co-coach Marika Ehrhardt.

Seven teams competed at the tournament, including the junior Elecs, Oxbow, Weyburn, Midale, Carlyle and Sacred Heart (Yorkton).

The senior Elecs bowed out to Weyburn, the reigning provincial champs, in the semifinals.

ECS made it interesting, though, winning one set and pushing 20 points in the other two.

"They were close games. We didn't get beat bad. It was definitely neck and neck," Ehrhardt said.

The Eagles would go on to lose to the Oxbow Black Knights in the final

Estevan posted a 4-2 record in round-robin play, picking up two wins on Friday and two more on Saturday.

Their weekend began with a victory over the junior Elecs, with a close 25-23 edge in the first set, followed by a 25-12 score in the second.

They then lost in two sets to Oxbow and defeated the Sacred Heart Saints in two sets to close out their day.

On Saturday, the senior girls defeated the Carlyle Cougars, lost to Weyburn and beat the Midale Marauders.

That set up a quarter-final match against Carlyle, which the Elecs took in two sets.

"We definitely came together more as a team, more communication on the court. Everybody had a chance to play, which was good. There were definitely lots of positive things," Ehrhardt said.

"It lifted our spirits to hopefully go on to regionals and maybe provincials."

The junior girls played four games on the first day of the tournament, with the highlight coming when they split a pair of sets against Midale.

The Elecs dominated the first set 25-7 before losing the second one 25-23.

The tournament was the fourth of the season for the senior Elecs, who took silver at the Mega Volleyball event hosted by Arcola, Carlyle and Manor last month. They also competed at a U of R tournament and in Weyburn.

They are in Swift Current this weekend, followed by tournaments in Yorkton and Midale. Regionals are in Moose Jaw on the Remembrance Day w
