Top youth curlers hit Estevan

Many of southeast Saskatchewan’s top high school curlers were at the Power Dodge Curling Centre on March 3 and 4 for the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association’s Region B playdowns.

Many of southeast Saskatchewan’s top high school curlers were at the Power Dodge Curling Centre on March 3 and 4 for the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association’s Region B playdowns.

Six teams were entered in each of the boys, girls and mixed divisions. They competed in games on March 3 to determine the top four teams in each division, and then those teams advanced to the page playoff the following day.

In the boys division, Yorkton Regional High School defeated Carlyle’s Gordon F. Kells High School 8-4 in the showdown between the top two teams, to punch their ticket for provincials in Assiniboia on March 10 and 11. In the game between the third and fourth place teams, Sturgis Composite School edged Balgonie’s Greenall School 4-3, ending Balgonie’s tournament.

Sturgis advanced to play Carlyle in the final game of the tournament, and Carlyle defeated Sturgis 9-4 to advance to provincials.

Also entered were Grenfell High School and Weyburn Comprehensive School. They were eliminated after the first day of competition.

In the girls division, the Carnduff Education Complex entry defeated Esterhazy High School 7-5 in the 1-2 playoff game to advance to provincials in Moose Jaw on March 10 and 11. Lemberg’s North Valley School beat Weyburn 7-2 to advance to the final game, but North Valley was defeated 10-7 by Esterhazy for the other spot in provincials.

Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton and Kelliher School were the other teams entered.
As for the mixed playdowns, Yorkton Sacred Heart defeated Greenall School No. 1 6-2 to qualify for provincials, which will also be March 10 and 11 in Moose Jaw. In the battle between the third and fourth place games, Weyburn edged Maryfield School 5-4.

But then Weyburn was beat 6-5 by Greenall 1 in the final provincial qualifier game.

Also entered in mixed regionals were Canora Composite School and another team from Greenall.
