Hope for 'positive' result from search for missing University of Regina student

REGINA — Rallies are being held at the University of Regina in aid of searches for a popular student and athlete from Nigeria who vanished without a trace nearly two weeks ago.

Promise Chukwudum, a 19-year-old man who also goes by the name of Max, disappeared on the night of Nov. 17 when the temperature was below -20 C.

He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, light sweatpants and a dark toque at the time.

Friends say the second-year computer science student and U of R rugby player was last seen at a bar and a house party before social media accounts he's active on went silent.

Police have looked in two neighbourhoods and the city landfill, while searches involving a number of civilians shifted Thursday to Regina's Kiwanis Park.

Another search was planned for Friday and Promise's sister, Chinaza, says their father is travelling from Nigeria to help.

"I’m just hoping for something positive to come out real soon," said Chinaza.

"If there’s anyone that has him hostage I'm begging that they let him leave, to just let him go. We were supposed to spend Christmas together."

Nathan Sgrazzutti, Promise’s friend, said he believes that if Chukwudum left the house party it was because he didn’t want to be there, or didn’t feel safe.

Sgrazzutti is asking the public to check their yards, sheds, recreational vehicles and anything Promise may have sought shelter in on a frigid night.

"Someone has to know where he’s gone. It’s Regina, it’s the world’s biggest small town," he said.

Police said earlier this week that they're working on the case on a daily basis.

"Each day I feel we're making progress in this investigation but we still don't the ability to say we found him," said Chief Evan Bray.

The university is urging students who are feeling stressed because of the disappearance to contact counselling services for support. (CJME, CTV Regina)
