Byron Fichter discussed his love for photography and the photos he took during a trip to Costa Rica earlier this year during a reception Friday night at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum (EAGM).

Fichter’s Costa Rica photographs are currently on display at the EAGM through his exhibit, One Man, One Camera, One Tripod, and a large crowd gathered to congratulate him on the exhibit and to view his photography.

"I'm really excited that I got to do something like this," he told the Mercury in an interview before his artist talk. "The main print is about 244 square feet, which is something I've never done before."

It's a beach photo that occupies much of the east wall of the gallery.

"Standing in front of it, it makes you feel like you're at the beach," said Fichter.

The trip to Costa Rica was a chance for him to reboot, he said, and he took lots of animal and scenery photos. He didn’t spend much time spent in cities or popular tourist areas. There are a number of animal photos in the exhibit, including one of two toucans, which Fichter called his favourite.

Fichter earned the right to have the exhibit after he took top spot at the 2017 Ev Johnson Memorial Adjudicated Art Show, organized by the Estevan Arts Council. He used a Gasoline Alley selection of photographs to win the art show last year, but wanted to do something different for the EAGM exhibit.

"I did post some stuff from Costa Rica, but ... very little of this stuff has been on social media before, so it's like all new stuff you wouldn't have seen before," said Fichter.

Next week's edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
