The Souris Valley Trekkers are getting ready for another edition of the Roche Percee Trail Ride and Wagon Trek.

Joyce Schlapkohl with the Trekkers said the plans for the event are coming together well. It will be Aug. 9-11, with the ride departing Roche Percee at 1 p.m. the first day, 9 a.m. the second and 10:30 a.m. the final day.

The former Roche Percee ball diamonds will be the start-finish line for the trail ride, and camping will be available on the site.

Schlapkohl noted there won’t be any meals provided this year, and everyone will be responsible for their own food and beverages.

They will also have to take their own food out with them on the trails. The second day typically has the longest ride of the weekend.

“The scenery is wonderful. It always is,” she said. “Some of the scenery that you go to is the same from previous years, but … riding in the valley never gets old; it’s always a pleasure.”

Registration is $30 per person, regardless of whether people go on one, two or three trail rides. Children ages seven to 12 are $15, and those under six are free, but everyone must register.

People don’t have to pre-register this year, because there won’t be meals provided.

Schlapkohl noted that all children must wear an approved equestrian safety helmet when riding a horse. Participants also have to supply their own horse.

The Trekkers continue to organize the event each year because participants continue to really enjoy the event, and the organization would hate to see it come to an end.

“If it dies, then the organization will fall apart,” said Schlapkohl. “And it doesn’t matter whether we have 30 people or 100, we always have a good time. Weather permitting, everything will go well, and go as planned.”

Anybody who does come out will have a great time, she said.
