Southeast communities ready to celebrate Canada Day

Southeast Saskatchewan residents will have several options to choose from to celebrate our country’s 152nd birthday on Canada Day. Many people will once again flock to Bienfait for their festivities, which kick off with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m.

Many people will once again flock to Bienfait for their festivities, which kick off with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. One of the biggest attractions of the day is the parade, which will start at 10 a.m.

It begins at the Bienfait Weldon School and makes its way through the streets of the community, crossing Highway 18 at multiple points before winding up at the Bienfait Memorial Arena.

Large crowds turn out to watch the parade each year.

Judging for the parade will be at 9:30 a.m.

Numerous activities will begin at 11 a.m., including a toonie swim at the town’s pool, a cake cutting ceremony, a cake walk, and a mini firemen’s rodeo.

The Bienfait Coalfields Historical Museum will be open at noon, and bingo will also begin at that time.

The firemen will face the farmers in their annual softball game at 3:30 p.m. 

Other activities during the day will be a dunk tank, a slow-pitch tournament and concessions. The Saskatchewan Roughriders football game will be shown on the big screen at 5 p.m.

Another highlight of the day, the annual fireworks show, will begin at dusk.

Proceeds from the day will be directed to the Bienfait Recreation Board.

A popular event within Estevan city limits is the bash hosted by the Estevan Kinsmen and Kinettes Club at their play park in the Hillside subdivision. The Kin clubs host the event as a means to give back to the people of Estevan for all of their support throughout the year.

Games, swimming and a barbecue will be highlights of the event.

A long-standing Canada Day tradition will be happening with the festivities at the Oungre Memorial Regional Park.

The activities will begin at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast. Bouncy houses will be open at 10 a.m. for kids, and at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., members of the famous paw patrol will be there to greet children.

Face painting will begin at 11:30 a.m.

One of the popular attractions each year, the country gospel jamboree, will run from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., with several different bands performing.

A Canada Day parade will occur at 1:30 p.m., and a scavenger hunt will begin at 2 p.m. Additional kids activities are slated for 2:30 p.m.

A cabaret will start at 8 p.m., and a midnight lunch will be served at 11 p.m.

Other activities scheduled for throughout the day include an antique tractor show, a vehicle show and shine, a longest drive competition at the park’s golf course, a contest for the best decorated campsite and a fastball game.

Fireworks will occur once it’s dark.

Mainprize Regional Park will also have activities in the afternoon and the evening. There will be a parade for quads, golf carts and side-by-sides starting at 3:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to decorate their entry. A people’s choice award will be handed out for the best-decorated entry.

A wiener roast will occur at the beach starting at 4:30 p.m. People are asked to bring their own refreshments and lawn chairs.

Fireworks are slated to begin at dark.

The Oxbow Youth Drop-in Centre will host an event as well. Celebrations will begin at 11 a.m. with a prayer and a rendition of O Canada. Entertainment and various activities will be at the Oxbow Rink and the Cenotaph Park.

Taco in a bag and hot dogs can be purchased for lunch.

Activities will include bouncy castles, a photo booth, face painting, a cake walk, Chinese auction, a 50-50 draw, a reverse dunk tank, a petting zoo, bumper cars and more.

The drop-in centre is encouraging people to decorate their yard, store front or business entrance for Canada Day, and the youth group will select a winner. People are also urged to come dressed in their best Canada Day attire for the celebrations and win a prize.

Carnduff residents will celebrate Canada Day with an afternoon filled with activities, starting at 1 p.m. Most of the activities will take place at the town’s Memorial Park.

People can look forward to bouncy castles, free swimming and food vendors throughout the day, hair braiding, a raffle and a loonie auction starting at 2 p.m., a tractor pull at 2:30 p.m., and a toonie cake walk at 3 p.m.

Live music featuring a variety of bands, including some from the Carnduff area, will be at 1-4 p.m. and 7-9:45 p.m. 

A pulled pork supper will be served from 4-6:30 p.m.

Fireworks will begin at dusk.

The Carnduff Canada Day bash is hosted by Choose Life Ministry, and proceeds will be directed to the ministry’s effort to support young women with life-controlling issues.
