The carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Power Station had another excellent month in August, setting a new 2020 mark for the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) captured.
According to numbers released by SaskPower on Friday, the facility captured 78,127 tonnes of CO2 in August, surpassing the previous single month high of 75,503 tonnes set in July.
The average daily capture rate when CCS was online in August was 2,522 tonnes per day, with a peak one-day capture rate of 2,716 tonnes.
The CCS facility was online 98.4 per cent of the month, coming offline for 12 hours due to issues with electrostatic precipitators at Boundary Dam Unit 3.
The CCS facility had been online an average of 77 per cent of the time during the previous 12 months.
Unit 3 produced an average of about 110 megawatts of power, compared to about 106 megawatts the previous 12 months.
And the amount of CO2 captured in August was well above the 12-month average of 57,361 tonnes of CO2.
So far this year, the CCS facility has captured 475,347 tonnes of CO2. And last month saw the facility eclipse 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 captured. Since it came online in October 2014, the CCS facility has captured 3,556,799 tonnes of CO2.
