The carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Power Station had another very productive month in May.

The facility captured 72,236 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) last month. The average daily capture when CCS was online was 2,342 tonnes per day with a peak one-day capture of 2,487 tonnes.

In the previous 12 months, the CCS facility captured an average of 63,975 tonnes of CO2 per month.

The CCS facility experienced a very brief outage because of issues caused by wet coal, however CCS quickly recovered and restarted. The facility was online for 99.5 per cent of the month, up from the previous 12-month average of 87.2 per cent.

Additionally, an online chemical clean performed near the end of the month provided relief to the system and allowed for an increase in production just ahead of a planned outage in June. No further details on the planned shutdown were immediately available.

A total of 4,143,519 tonnes of CO2 have now been captured since the CCS facility went online in October 2014, including 332,972 in the first five months of 2021.
