Earlier this summer a long-time dream was realized at the Southeast College Estevan Campus. Since the campus opened its doors in January 2011, then known as the Saskatchewan Energy Training Institute, Southeast College staff have envisioned oilfield equipment as part of their landscape. This equipment provides the opportunity for a hands-on learning environment, which allows students to put theory into practice. In a press released, the college noted it has worked diligently to form and nurture partnerships with industry throughout the region. These partnerships are what have made the simulated lease project possible.

“Partnerships such as these are key to the continued success of the college. We appreciate all of the work and donations that were committed to the project thus far,” said Dion McGrath, president and CEO of Southeast College.

Potential uses of the pump jack include training opportunities for programs such as Oil and Gas Rig Worker.  This program was developed to give basic knowledge of the oil industry to potential new employees in the oil and gas field.

One of the partners, Dwight Packer of Skylift Services Inc. said, “Skylift Services was pleased to be asked to participate in the simulated lease project. Southeast College provides valuable education for the oilfield in southeast Saskatchewan.”

Future plans for expansion of the project includes adding a non-operating motor, tanks, a doghouse and fencing. Companies interested in collaborating with the college are encouraged to call Faye Billington at 306-848-2530.
