The City of Estevan has announced plans to open the time capsule that has been inside the Civic Auditorium.

In a press release, the city said Estevan was a very different place 61 years ago when the Civic opened. Harry Nicholson was mayor, the Star Light Drive-In was a popular place and a lot of people attended their first Estevan Bruins game at the Civic.

A time capsule was buried during the construction of the arena. The original time capsule was unearthed during a renovation of the arena’s siding in 2005, and the capsule was opened during the May 9, 2005 meeting of city council. The capsule was returned a short time later, with a few new additions.

The opening ceremony for the capsule will happen on May 15 at 1 p.m. at the Estevan Leisure Centre. There will be an opportunity to view items after the official opening.

Items may include lists of members for multiple organizations throughout the community who used the facility, including the Estevan Lions Club and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Auxiliary.

The city expects to find items such as an edition of Estevan Mercury, Estevan Bruins game day programs and maps of Saskatchewan.

The city has also announced that demolition of the Civic Auditorium is scheduled to commence on May 14, with a scheduled completion date of June 15.

During the demolition, heavy equipment and truck traffic will increase along Eighth Street, 13th Avenue and 6th Street. Debris from the demolition site will be transported to the City of Estevan landfill.
