The City of Estevan is going to host a fall version of its Operation Clean Sweep.

The cleanup initiative will run from Sept. 21-23, with a free weekend at the landfill. City of Estevan residents can bring their household waste to the landfill during the three days.

People will have to be a resident of Estevan and proof of residency will be required to use the landfill for free during those three days.

Rebecca Westling, the destination marketing and communications consultant for the City of Estevan, said the city has been holding an Operation Clean Sweep in the spring for the past three years. It is held over the course of a week in May, with numerous beautification initiatives, including a free landfill weekend.

Now the city has added another free landfill weekend for the fall.

“We just want to give residents the opportunity to clean up their yards, to get rid of any refuse that they need to get rid of, or that they would normally keep in their residences or on their properties,” said Westling.

The city has had requests to have a free landfill weekend in the fall in the past, as people want to clean out their gardens, clean up their yards and make sure that items can be cleaned out.

Items that can be dropped off for free include furniture, grass clippings, tree branches and regular household garbage, including appliances. All refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and mattresses and box springs are excluded from the list of items accepted.

Hazardous materials are not accepted, either, and any waste from rural customers will not be accepted for free. Hazardous materials include tires, paint (including cans or aerosol), batteries, televisions, computers, printers, oil, oil jugs, oil filters, any petroleum products and railway ties, which are never accepted at the City of Estevan landfill.

Commercial properties will not be included in the free landfill weekend, but the city encourages all commercial properties to participate in the clean sweep effort by keeping their properties tidy.

All loads must be completely covered or secured to prevent littering while in transport to the landfill.
