The Civic Auditorium has been closed to the public.

The City of Estevan made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.

“This decision of closure is not taken lightly, however, for the safety of the users, it is a necessary measure at this time,” the city stated in a news release.

The 60-year-old building was recently assessed by professional engineers to determine the condition of the structural, electrical, mechanical and architectural components, with an emphasis on public safety and feasibility of mitigation.

“Considerable work is required to bring this building up to a safe standard and the available options are currently under evaluation by council,” the press release said.

City of Estevan staff will work with the affected user groups of this facility to find ways to meet the recreational expectations.

Discussion pending the future of the Civic Auditorium will take place at the next open council meeting on November 20.

The Civic Auditorium opened in 1957 and was the home of the Estevan Bruins hockey club until 2011, when the Bruins moved to Affinity Place. Since then, the Civic has continued to be used by minor hockey, recreation hockey and other user groups.

It has also hosted many community events over the years.

The Mercury will have more information on this as it becomes available.
