Council delays its decision on the Civic

Estevan city council has once again delayed making a decision on the future of the Civic Auditorium. Council received a couple of reports at its meeting on Monday night.

Estevan city council has once again delayed making a decision on the future of the Civic Auditorium.

Council received a couple of reports at its meeting on Monday night. One was from Estevan Fire Rescue Service Chief Dale Feser, who discussed the structure of the building and explained how the fire department would handle a fire should one happen in the 60-year-old building.

The other was from MuniCode Services, who said they wouldn't second guess the report WSP Engineering submitted last month that led council to close the Civic.

Mayor Roy Ludwig said council decided not to make a decision on Monday night because a local private contractor hired another firm, C.A. Reed and Associates, to conduct an engineering survey of the Civic.

"A second opinion is a second opinion, so council will take a look at it," said Ludwig. "We haven't paid for it. It was paid by local contractors."

Ludwig hoped council would have had the report today, but he said the city only has portions of it.

"We hope to have it this week, and then it will be up to council how much weight they put into this second report," said Ludwig.

He is optimistic council will be able to make a decision on the Civic's future at the Dec. 18 meeting.

This week's edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
