A boot camp for youths in Estevan has been taking place this week at the Estevan Leisure Centre, and will happen again in August.

The camp, which ran from July 23-27 and is open to anyone between the ages of 13 through 16, boasts a fun environment to exercise, work on cardiovascular endurance, improve muscular strength and provide knowledge on the importance of a good efficient warm up and cool down when exercising. It also gives a place for youths to become involved with personal fitness, according to Diane Wenham, events manager for the City of Estevan.

“Boot camp is running this week and again in August, with each camp running for five days. We have nine youths participating this time around,” said Wenham.

A community grant was used for funding the program and the main goal is to get children involved and interested in physical activity and continued lifelong fitness.

The cost of attending the five-day camp is a monthly pass to the leisure centre. The classes involved offer a mixture of intervals, obstacle courses, as well as spin bike and boot camp style workouts.

The two instructors who are leading the camp are Austin Halladay and Carrie Frostad. Halladay was born in Estevan and raised in Roche Percee; growing up he was heavily involved in sports including hockey and baseball. Frostad was born in Regina and moved to Estevan from Humboldt in 2017. She was also heavily involved in sports and played everything, including ringette, softball, volleyball, basketball, badminton, rugby and broomball. She is also certified by the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association in group fitness and aquatic fitness
