One of the longest-tenured employees for the City of Estevan is retiring.

Kevin Sutter, who is currently in charge of water and wastewater services, has announced that he will retire as of Dec. 29. Sutter has been with the city since 1987, and he is looking forward to moving on to some new opportunities.

He noted that since coming to Estevan in 1987, a number of projects have been completed, including the construction of a water treatment plant, a waste water treatment plant and a second water reservoir.

A new residuals management facility opened last month.

Sutter became the superintendent of water and wastewater treatment in 1995. In 2015, his duties changed to become in charge of all water and wastewater services.

“I looked after the water and sewer crew that did the undergrounds, as well as the operation of the treatment plants,” Sutter said in an interview with the Mercury.

Sutter said he is thankful for the support shown by council over the years, and gave credit to the staff in the water division. He noted he has worked with six different mayors and a lot of councillors.

“I had the benefit of working with some exceptional operators, both who are currently employed with the city, and those who went on to bigger and better things,” said Sutter.

The city has announced that Shane Bucsis will be moving into Sutter’s role. Bucsis was hired earlier this year by the city as part of a succession plan for Sutter, and has been learning about the division’s operations from Sutter since that time.

Next week’s edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
