Students from Hillcrest School showed their support for local law enforcement agencies on Wednesday.

The Grade 5/6 class, as well as a few Grade 7 and 8 students, visited the Estevan RCMP detachment and the Estevan Police Service building. They presented care packages to those in both buildings, with water, chewing gum, candy, snacks and anti-stress balls.

“These are general so that hopefully, when they open the bag, it will hit the spot and give them what they need for that day,” said Brian Hayes, who teaches Grades 5 and 6 at Hillcrest.

The visits were part of the school’s participation in the Classroom Champions program. Each month students receive a challenge from their athlete mentor, Paralympic snowboarder Michelle Salt, and one of their challenges was to do something for the community.

In honour of the United Way Estevan’s Day of Caring, they decided to celebrate the contributions of the police.

“This is our attempt to give something back to the people who work so hard to make us safe,” said Hayes.

While at the RCMP building, the students received a tour of the building, and some information on the RCMP, its history and its logo.
