The We Day Club at Spruce Ridge School has had a number of initiatives in recent years to help build the school and the community.

Now the club’s 40 members are planning a We Day Conference this month to show the community what happens at a We Day event.

The conference will take place on June 20. Club members Haley Copeland, Reese Madsen and Hannah Terrett said We Day will have a morning session that will run from 9:15-11:30 a.m., and another in the afternoon from 1-3:15 p.m.

“We have lots of energy, motivational speakers, music, prizes, dancing and lots of fun,” said Reese.

The first speaker will be Brady Johnson from Encompass Fitness, who will discuss the value of perseverance. Doug Barstable from the local Habitat for Humanity chapter will discuss how the club helped the organization.

“We raised $2,500 for Habitat for Humanity, and we did that by a movie night, hot lunch, ice cream sales and just a few things like bake sales and candy kabobs,” said Hannah.

We Day Club member Kaitlyn Desrosiers will give a talk on bullying at the conference as well.

The club wanted to host a conference to show the community what We Day is about, and to educate youth on how to create change while having fun and inspiring others, Hannah said.

They are excited with how the event is shaping up, and they have put in a lot of work.

“We have lots of prizes and candy, and the speakers are supposed to be really good,” said Haley.

The club has held meetings during lunch hour and after school, and they had a sleepover planning session and meetings on Sundays.

They have been to We Day in Saskatoon and Winnipeg, and they took ideas from both to put them together to create their own event.

“We’re working really hard to try to inspire the Estevan youth to create change in themselves, and create change they wish to see in the world,” said Hannah.

Local schools have been invited to attend the conference, and club members hope the public will attend as well.

“It’s a really great event and cause,” said Haley.
