The Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit has charged a resident from the United States with two child pornography offences as a result of a seizure by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

CBSA officers conducted an examination Jan. 31 on a traveller at the Oungre border crossing, which resulted in the discovery of suspected child pornography on electronic devices. The man was arrested and turned over to the Weyburn RCMP.

The ICE Unit confirmed the suspect images as child pornography and seized 10 electronic devices for further forensic analysis.

Michael Garland Crawford, age 47, of Williston, N.D., has been charged with possession of child pornography and importation of child pornography. Both charges are under the Criminal Code.

Crawford was remanded into custody and appeared in Weyburn Provincial Court at 10 a.m. on Feb. 4. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to a year in prison.

The Saskatchewan ICE Unit is comprised of investigators from the RCMP, Regina Police Service, Saskatoon Police Service and Prince Albert Police Service. Their mandate is to investigate crimes involving the abuse and/or exploitation of children on the Internet.
