EPS members make arrests for thefts, conditions violations

Police received a report of a hit and run involving a vehicle at a north-central Estevan parking lot. The matter is under investigation.

Members stopped a vehicle in the 900-block of King Street during the July 9 night shift. A 31-year-old male from Dalmeny was issued a 72-hour driving suspension and his vehicle was impounded for three days after he provided a sample with a warn on an approved screening device.

Police responded to a two-vehicle collision in the 1500-block of Third Street. Both vehicles were drivable and the drivers were assisted with providing statements.

Officers attended to a complaint of a vehicle stunting on Superior Avenue. The matter is still under investigation.

A stray dog in southeast Estevan was reported during the July 10 day shift. It appeared to be distressed and dehydrated. Members attended the area, but the dog was not located.

A possible vehicle theft was reported, in which a vehicle owner allowed another person to drive and assume financial responsibility for the vehicle, but then refused to return the vehicle as per the agreed upon date. The matter was resolved without further incident.

A male was reported to be refusing to leave a homeowner’s yard. Members attended, but the male had already left the area. He was eventually found and spoken to without further incident.

The EPS received a report regarding a dog inside a parked vehicle in a central Estevan parking lot. Members attended to find the dog OK, and the vehicle running with water provided for the dog. No further action was required.

Members were called to a south Estevan residence on the report of a domestic disturbance. A female refused to leave after being told to do so. She left when police arrived without further incident.

Officers responded to a complaint of a theft from a local business during the July 10 night shift. The suspect vehicle was located at a local lounge and investigation into the matter led to charges of theft under $5,000 for a 40-year-old Estevan man. He was released with an undertaking to an officer in charge and a promise to appear court in August.

Police arrested a 29-year-old British Columbia man for public intoxication. Subsequent investigation revealed he had warrants with a different agency, dating back to 2012. He was lodged in cells and remanded for court on Thursday.

A 23-year-old Estevan woman was observed in a north Estevan establishment, which was in violation of a release condition. The matter remains under investigation.

A syringe was located by a member of the public in a northeast Estevan neighbourhood during the July 12 night shift. Members attended and safely disposed of it. The public is reminded to be sure to call police when items such as this are located, as there are health risks involved if they aren’t disposed of properly.

A male was observed in a northeast Estevan restaurant acting suspiciously, and then left. He was seen again in central Estevan. The male was located and spoken to by police without incident, and was left to carry on his way.

A 23-year-old Estevan woman was arrested and transported to the police station, where she was lodged in cells for breaching a condition of her undertaking. She entered a location where the primary purpose is the sale of alcohol. She was held for court the following morning at 9:30 a.m.

Members were called to a central Estevan establishment on a report of a male causing a disturbance. He left without incident upon police arrival and then later returned and attempted to re-enter the establishment. Police returned, at which time he was arrested for public intoxication. He was transported to the police station, where he was lodged in cells and released the following morning when sober.

Officers attended to a southeast Estevan neighbourhood, where a male was driving his vehicle recklessly. He had his vehicle’s side window broken by a local resident who threw rocks at the vehicle. The matter was resolved without further incident.

A hit and run was reported from an east central Estevan parking lot. The matter remains under investigation.

Police received a complaint during the July 13 day shift of a person walking on Kensington Avenue and was thought to possibly be impaired. Police located the person and found the individual to be OK but having difficulties. Police assisted the individual and no further police action was required.

Police then received a report of a person in a park that was lying in the shade. Police located a person and it was learned that the individual was enjoying the day. No further police action was required.

Members conducted check stops around Estevan during the July 13 night shift. No impaired drivers were found. One driver was checked on a roadside device and was just under the legal limit. Another driver charged for operating a vehicle on a learner’s licence with no supervising driver.

Officers were dispatched to a disturbance in a downtown alley. Three men were located and spoken to. They were all intoxicated and one was found to be on a conditional sentence order, and was not to consume alcohol. An allegation was completed and looked at remanding him for a court appearance on Monday.

Police then were called to a north end apartment for a male who was causing a disturbance while intoxicated. He was arrested and lodged in cells until sober.

Members were dispatched to a complaint of a noisy party at a north end residence. The homeowner was spoken to and warned of the bylaw.

Police are looking into a possible theft of fuel from a local service station that occurred during the July 14 day shift. Police are awaiting video from the incident. The matter is under investigation.

Officers also participated in the Street Fair on Fourth Street with their community support vehicle on display. The Street Fair looked to be well attended and there were no incidents reported.

Many driving complaints were received as a result of traffic speeding through the traffic detour in northeast Estevan. The public is reminded to obey the 30 kilometre per hour speed zones along the detour route. These detours proceed through residential areas where there are many pedestrians, including children at play.

The EPS received many reports of unsightly properties throughout the city, including long grass and weeds. The public is reminded to ensure property is well kept as per the City of Estevan bylaw. Long grass and weeds welcome unwanted rodents, so keeping these areas well maintained is important. Also, keeping all areas well maintained is good for aesthetic reasons.

Police are still receiving calls about telemarketing scams and people trying to sell anti-virus software to be installed on computers. Citizens are warned not to give out personal information over the phone or allow access to their personal computers over the phone as personal information can be stolen.
