Members of the Estevan Police Service (EPS) have received a number of reports about a phone scam involving people’s bank cards and credit cards.

Sgt. Kevin Reed said a number of people have received the phone calls from individuals, indicating their card was fraudulently used. The caller attempts to get information about the card, as well as personal information, in an attempt to use the card.

“There have been varying degrees of compliance, where they (the victims) have provided information to them,” Reed told the Mercury. “We haven’t had any at this point who have suffered any loss because they didn`t provide enough information to have a loss.”

This scam is relatively new for Estevan, as it started in the past three or four months. The scammers appear to have moved on from the Canada Revenue Agency scam now that tax season is largely finished.

The EPS reminds the public not to provide information to anyone on a cold call.

“Credit cards companies aren`t just going to call you and ask you to confirm information to them,” said Reed.

The EPS had a couple of calls regarding this scam on Friday morning alone. They also continue to receive calls regarding someone claiming to be with the STARS Air Ambulance lottery, and they still receive some calls about the Canada Revenue Agency scam.
