Is spray-painting an RCMP vehicle like putting the bell on the cat?

There’s a fairy tale that talks about mice putting a bell around the neck of the cat, and surely it was along those lines that two young men decided to spray-paint a RCMP vehicle in Carnduff on Dec. 16.

There’s a fairy tale that talks about mice putting a bell around the neck of the cat, and surely it was along those lines that two young men decided to spray-paint a RCMP vehicle in Carnduff on Dec. 16.

However, while their nerve may have been strong, their luck was not, and they were eventually caught and landed in court as a result.

Those men, Valeriy Portas, 20, and Rayden McMunn, 18, both appeared in Estevan Provincial Court on Feb. 11, each facing four mischief/willful damages charges.

They included spray-painting an RCMP vehicle, spray painting a street sign, damaging siding to property belonging to Triple M Homes, and damaging the door to the Carnduff Curling Club. In all cases, the damages were estimated to be under $5,000.

Crown prosecutor Chris Gratton was amiable to both of the young men being dealt with through alternative measures, a non-judicial remedy which may see them performing various tasks like community service or paying restitution.

This will result in neither of them acquiring a criminal record for the day of mischief, if they successfully complete what they are assigned.

Judge Lane Wiegers agreed with allowing both cases to go to alternative measures, and the matters were adjourned to May 15, to allow McMunn and Portas time to complete their alternative measures programs. Typically, if such alternative measures are successfully completed, the matter is then dropped by the courts at the return date.
