The Estevan Police Service has released more details on an alleged dangerous driving incident earlier this week.

The EPS conducted a traffic stop Monday at about 10:30 p.m. on a motor vehicle travelling at an extreme rate of speed eastbound on Fourth Street. The pick-up truck had continued to accelerate through the core area of the city, reaching speeds of 118 kilometres per hour in the posted 50 km/hr zone.

The driver was stopped in the 700-block of Fourth Street.

The 30-year-old male driver from Estevan was initially charged with speeding under the Traffic Safety Act.

Upon review of the evidence and circumstances, this charge was upgraded Tuesday to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle under the Criminal Code. The driver’s vehicle has been impounded and his licence has been suspended.

“The actions of the driver in this case go far beyond mere speeding,” said Police Chief Paul Ladouceur. “Travelling at these excessive speeds puts both pedestrians and motorists at extreme risk. These driving actions cannot, and will not, be tolerated.”
