Police busy with impaired driving, assault and mischief incidents

Members of the Estevan Police Service (EPS) have dealt with impaired driving, assault and mischief incidents during the past week. Officers received a complaint through the Report Impaired Drivers line during the Sept. 24 night shift.

  • Officers received a complaint through the Report Impaired Drivers line during the Sept. 24 night shift. The caller was concerned about a male acting suspicious in a parking lot. The 35-year-old Estevan man was drinking alcohol and entered a vehicle with open alcohol. Police attended and arrested the male for being in care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired. He was returned to the police station and later released to appear in court in December.
  • Police attended to a disturbance at a local hotel that night. Members arrested a 19-year-old Estevan woman for assault. She also had warrants for her arrest out of Regina. She was held in custody and transported to Regina for the outstanding warrants there, and will appear in Estevan court in December to answer to the assault charge.
  • Members received a barking dog complaint in the Hillside area. Officers attended and were unable to wake someone at the residence. Police were able to contact the homeowner on the phone. The homeowner was at work and returned immediately to deal with the barking dog.
  • Police received a call at around 11:30 a.m. on Sept 25 about a possible impaired driver. A 55-year-old Estevan man was arrested and charged for impaired and driving while over .08 after he blew 3 1/2 times the legal limit. He was held in custody until he could sober up and be turned over to a responsible person.
  • Officers and the bylaw enforcement officer conducted patrols and issued 10 tickets for unregistered vehicles parked on the street. The EPS reminds citizens to register their vehicles or move them off the street if they are unregistered.
  • Police received more calls about the STARS lottery scam. Members thank everyone for reporting the scams and want to remind people to be cautious of all scams.
  • Members received a report of a theft from a local business. Police have viewed the video and recognize the female in the video. The matter remains under investigation and charges for theft will be laid.
  • Police received a report during the Sept. 25 night shift that a trailer being towed had come unhooked from the vehicle on Kensington Avenue. Police attended and the trailer and vehicle were already gone.
  • Members were notified that a number of pylons were stolen and removed from a construction site. The pylons were located a short time later blocking off a street. They were collected by police and returned to the construction site. Officers were notified later in the evening that the pylons were missing again, and they were found at the intersection of Kensington Avenue and Fourth Street. After they were returned to the site, officers were able to arrest three young males and one young female. They were also involved that night with striking curbside dumpsters that had been put out for garbage collection the following day. The individuals have been charged with two counts of mischief under the Criminal Code and the driver of the vehicle has also received two charges under the Traffic Safety Act. They will all appear in Estevan Provincial Court in December.
  • Officers were called to a noise complaint from a social gathering in west Estevan. Police attended and the function was just shutting down. No further action required.
  • Members were alerted to a report of a person going through vehicles in the parking lot of a downtown business during the Sept. 26 day shift. Police located the individual and the matter is under investigation.
  • Police also attended to a vehicle alarm. Members located the vehicle and checked the occupants. Police then learned that a toddler had pressed the emergency button without the parent knowing. No further police action was required.
  • Officers charged a 15-year-old male for theft under $5,000 during the Sept. 26 night shift, after a shoplifting incident from the Southern Plains Co-op. He was released for a future court date.
  • Police have laid charges in another reported theft from the co-op. Officers have identified the 40-year-old female suspect. She lives in a neighboring jurisdiction so a message to the RCMP was sent, requesting assistance in locating and arresting the accused.
  • Members have been investigating reports of a theft of fish from a backyard pond. Police were given names of possible suspects in the case. Officers are still investigating the incident but do not have enough evidence at this time. They have spoken to both suspects. If anyone has any further information that could assist police in the case, please call Crime Stoppers or the Estevan Police Service.
  • Police received a report of a coyote running along the Valley Street area. Police did patrols of the area but did not locate or see the coyote, and are hoping it just moved out along the valley edge.
  • Members are looking into a report of a theft of a bicycle from a residence on the cities north end that occurred during the Sept. 27 day shift.
  • Police are also investigating a report of a mischief to a vehicle that occurred in north Estevan. Officers observed damage to the vehicle and are in the process of speaking to suspects and witnesses to the event.
  • Police conducted multiple curfew checks during the Sept. 27 night shift, and all people were located at home.
  • Officers stopped a vehicle to check for the driver’s sobriety. A roadside sample was taken and a warning result was obtained. The driver had his driver’s licence suspended and vehicle was sized.
  • Members responded to a couple of alarms that turned out to be false.
  • Police charged a man for having open liquor in a vehicle after the person left a downtown establishment and boarded a taxi. The taxi did not leave because of the alcohol and was still there when police arrived. The man was charged and sent on his way.
  • Members were notified of an assault that took place at a local school during school hours on Sept. 28. Officers will be contacting all parties involved and charges are pending.
  • Police were also notified of a youth drinking in a parking lot. A 16-year-old female was served a ticket under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act.
  • Officers received a complaint of uttering threats. Upon further investigation, it was determined that no threats had been made.
  • Police stopped a vehicle during the Sept. 28 night shift and checked the driver for sobriety. The driver ended up recording a warning reading on the roadside screening device. The 49-year-old Alberta man was issued a three-day suspension as a result of the stop.
  • Members then dealt with an intoxicated male who was walking on the street in a residential area. Police located the male trying to gain entry into his residence and spoke with him. It was learned that his roommate had locked him out of the house accidently, and he then took care of the intoxicated male. No further police action was required.
  • Officers then checked another vehicle and the driver was also checked for sobriety. The driver failed and was placed under arrest. The 34-year-old man from Outlook was found to be a suspended driver and on court-ordered conditions. He was later released on charges of driving while suspended and breaching conditions. His vehicle was also impounded and he received a further driving suspension as a result of the consumption of alcohol.
