Police handle calls for scams, driving issues and an accident

The Estevan Police Service (EPS) continues to receive calls regarding scams involving people pretending to be with the STARS Air Ambulance or the Canada Revenue Agency.

According to the police report for May 21, the scams involves people receiving calls regarding prizes from STARS or a large tax refund from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Two more STARS lottery calls came in May 22. In one instance, individuals claiming to represent STARS requested money in exchange for a prize, while in the other scam, personal information was requested. Fortunately, nothing was given.

The public is reminded to be aware of these frauds, and not to volunteer any information or give money no matter how legitimate it seems. Steps should be taken to verify any questionable communications directly with the involved organization.

In other recent police news, officers charged a central Estevan resident under the noise bylaw on May 19 after several complaints were received.

Police are investigating after a 911 call was received May 20 about an alleged assault. Members attended to a residence and spoke to the people involved to ascertain what had taken place. The matter is still under investigation.

Officers later responded to a report of a possible impaired driver. Police were able to locate the vehicle and spoke to the driver. After a brief investigation, it was learned that the driver was not impaired and was warned about their driving actions. No further action was required.

Members responded to a two-vehicle collision at Souris Avenue South and Fourth Street. There were no injuries, but both vehicles needed to be towed due to the damage. One driver is facing charges of failing to obey a red light at an intersection and will appear in court in July.

Police received a report on May 21 from a city worker that a resident had damaged some sidewalk. Officers are looking into the matter and the city estimated the damage to be over $2,000.

A 24-year-old Estevan man received a 72-hour driving suspension and his vehicle was impounded for three days, after he performed poorly on a standardized field sobriety test for driving under the influence of drugs.

An 18-year-old Estevan man was arrested and lodged in cells after a traffic stop on Arthur Avenue. He is facing two new charges of failing to comply with an undertaking to a justice of the peace and was to be taken before a judge.

The EPS received a report May 22 of a semi-trailer unit forcing another vehicle into the oncoming traffic lane in south Estevan. Fortunately, there was minimal traffic and a collision was avoided. The matter remains under investigation.

A report was received of a vehicle in an east-central Estevan parking lot with a number of children inside while the adult went inside a store. Police attended but the vehicle had already departed.

Members attended to a central Estevan restaurant as a result of a 911 call. It was discovered after police arrival that an employee had collapsed, but had since recovered without further incident.

A barking dog was reported in southeast Estevan. The matter remains under investigation by Estevan bylaw enforcement. The public is reminded to abide by this bylaw which states that it is unlawful to allow a dog to bark continuously for more than 10 minutes.

Estevan bylaw enforcement is investigating a report of an unsightly property in north-central Estevan.

Police are looking into a reported theft that took place in south Estevan. The owner reported that about $1,000 worth of property was missing. The matter is under investigation.

Officers attended to a complaint of a suspicious person around Woodend Drive. The matter is under investigation.
