Police participate in positive policing, respond to assault and accident

Members of the Estevan Police Service (EPS) resumed their positive policing initiatives for impaired driving during the Nov. 17 night shift.

According to the EPS Twitter feed, officers patrolling licensed establishments during the night placed a little token of appreciation, an SGI window scraper, on the windshield of vehicles that spent the night at those establishments.

Previous initiatives have included leaving gift cards on the windshields of vehicles that spent the night at local establishments.

Members responded to a domestic dispute in the Willow Park Greens Trailer Park. A 44-year-old Estevan male was arrested on a warrant for failing to comply with a probation order. Investigation into the dispute resulted in the male also facing two charges of assault. He was lodged in cells until sober and will be released on an undertaking with conditions. He will appear in court in January to answer to the charges.

Officers witnessed a physical altercation over a taxi cab outside a local lounge. Both parties were sent on their way and no further police involvement was needed.

Police received a complaint of a noisy party. The homeowner was warned of the bylaw.

During the Nov. 17 day shift, police were called to an accident in which a vehicle was rear-ended. Both vehicles were towed and no injuries were reported. The driver of the offending vehicle was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for driving at a speed that is not reasonable and safe.

  • In other recent police news, officers were called to a report of an assault during the Nov. 13 night shift. Members investigated the matter and separated the parties for the night. The matter remains under investigation.
  • Police received a report of barking dogs. Officers located the dogs and warned the owner of the bylaw.
  • Members received a 911 call from a local school during the Nov. 14 day shift. On arrival, the student responsible had left the scene and returned to his residence. The seven-year-old was located at his residence and spoken to, along with his parent, regarding the dangers of calling 911 in a non-emergency.
  • Officers attended to a complaint of a male threatening a roommate with a hammer. A 25-year-old Estevan man was arrested and charged with uttering threats to cause bodily harm. He will appear in Estevan Provincial Court in January to answer to the charges.
  • The EPS and the Estevan RCMP attended to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of King Street and Sawyer Road. One vehicle was towed from the scene and occupants of one vehicle had minor injuries. An Estevan male was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for failing to yield the right of way.
  • The EPS attended to two noise complaints in central Estevan during the Nov. 14 night shift. Both homeowners were warned of the bylaw, and no further action was required.
  • A 34-year-old male was arrested for breaching conditions of a recognizance. He was held to appear in court in the morning.
  • A statement was provided to police regarding a pedestrian who was nearly hit by a car in a parking lot. Charges are pending against the driver.
  • Members received a complaint during the Nov. 15 day shift of a youth walking on Perkins Street and playing in puddles. The seven-year-old boy was located and accompanied to his mother who worked a short distance away.
  • Police received a complaint from a local business of a suspicious white powder on a package. Officers attended and the powder tested negative for controlled substances.
  • Members did a well-being check on a 73-year-old woman. She was found in good health and spoken to by members.
  • Police arrested a 56-year-old man for charges of breaching a recognizance during the Nov. 15 night shift. The male was confronted by police when they learned that he was outside of his residence without permission. The male had refused to comply with police and would not exit his residence. Police negotiated with the subject who surrendered shortly afterward and was taken into custody.
  • The EPS attended to a 911 hang-up call. A commotion could be heard in the background, and members attended to the location of the caller. Police were told the call was made accidentally.
  • Police were called to a local drinking establishment. It appeared two male subjects were about to fight. Members attended and were told the males were merely in a verbal altercation. The males were told to leave the area, and no further action was required.
